SpaceX BFR Government Funding Update

SpaceX BFR Government Funding Update

My dream for this channel is to one-day report on SpaceX BFR’s first mission to Mars which will involve sending two cargo ships to the Red Planet. I can wait to make videos about SpaceX’s search for water resources, and talk about the hazards they identify on Mars. I imagine making videos about SpaceX placing power, mining and life support infrastructure on Mars which they will use on future flights. That would be so cool! And according to Musk, he believes that the BFR’s first mission to Mars may possibly be in 2022! It’s hard to imagine SpaceX developing a 106-meter long reusable rocket with a payload capacity 150,000 kg to LEO in just four years! But I feel a little better knowing that SpaceX may receive government funding for the development of the BFR. On November 17th, SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell spoke at the 2017 NewSpace Europe conference in Luxembourg. Shotwell said that SpaceX expects to receive additional funding from the US government for the BFR. She is most likely talking about the US Air Force’s Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle Program, or EELV. I made a video covering the backstory behind the EELV, so if you want to know more about that, click on the notification card at the top of the screen. Alright, there are new details about the EELV since I first covered the topic in November and we now know what we can expect from the program. The Air Force wants their National Security Space Missions to be launched by all American Launch Vehicles. They plan to fund significant portions of the development costs of three launch vehicles. And this is a HUGE deal that will have a tremendous impact on the future of the commercial space industry. The deadline for submissions to bid for an EELV contract was on November 20th. Let’s take a quick look at the next generation rockets that in the running for an EELV contract. First is Orbital ATK’s Next Generation Launcher, or NGL. The NGL is a 3 stage rocket capable of launching up to over 10,100 kg to a geosynchronous transfer orbit or GTO. While its nice to see Orbital ATK break into the intermediate and heavy class, which is a great achievement, it’s disappointing they see that they are not pushing the envelope and pursuing reusability. Next is The ULA’s Vulcan. The Vulcan is a 2 stage rocket capable of launching 23,000 kg to GTO. The Vulcan is that it will be partially reusable, they plan to recover the main engine with a heat shield and parachute. Although that is not as compelling as landing a booster, at least the ULA is taking a step toward reusability. The Vulcan is scheduled to be completed by mid-2020. Third is Blue Origin’s New Glenn. The New Glenn is a two or three stage rocket, capable of launching 13,000 kg to GTO and its first stage will be reusable, and should be completed by 2020. I made a video covering the New Glenn in more detail, so if want to know more, click on the notification card at the top of the screen. Alright, and lastly there is the BFR. So far, Orbital ATK and The ULA has confirmed their bids. According to Aviation Week, SpaceX and Blue Origin have not confirmed their submissions yet but are considered wildcards in the competition. But with the Air Force willing to subsidize three launch vehicles, it is a safe bet that Space did indeed submit a bid. Right now, the submissions are being reviewed and negotiations should begin in March and there should be formalized agreements signed by July. So, we should be able to confirm whether or not SpaceX received funding for the BFR by July. There are two phases of the competition. The first phase will consist of the 3 selected companies and rockets, which the Air Force will subsidize the development of the launch vehicle prototypes through fiscal year 2020. The Air Force will drop one of the companies in the second phase and the remaining two will compete for launch missions. The Air Force’s goal is to be able to launch a medium payload into polar orbit by 2021 using a next generation EELV launch vehicle. Then they want to be able to launch a heavy payload into polar orbit by 2024 or 2025. And by 2026, they want to be able to launch a heavy payload to geostationary orbit. If SpaceX is selected, they would have an even earlier completion target by a whole year. SpaceX would have to really get into gear and build the prototype quickly. The federal government officially shut down at midnight EST after a last ditch effort to continue funding failed to garner enough Democrat votes. This is a developing story. The vote to keep the government funded failed to get the 60 vote threshold to stop a Democratic filibuster. Five Democrats voted to continue funding and negotiating, including Joe Donnelly, Doug Jones, Claire McCaskill, Heidi Heitkamp and Joe Manchin. Four Republicans, including Lindsay Graham, Jeff Flake, Mike Lee and Rand Paul, voted against the procedural vote. Here is reporting from Fox News from earlier this evening, before midnight. A shutdown of the U.S. government was looking closer to a certainty late Friday after a short-term spending bill failed to advance in the Senate. The bill to keep government running through mid-February failed after 10 p.m., after a vote to end debate did not garner the 60 votes needed for passage, the Washington Post reported. The vote left little hope that an alternative deal would be reached before a midnight EST deadline arrived. Earlier Friday, President Donald Trump seemed pessimistic that a deal could be reached in time. “Not looking good for our great Military or Safety & Security on the very dangerous Southern Border,” the president tweeted. “Dems want a Shutdown in order to help diminish the great success of the Tax Cuts, and what they are doing for our booming economy.” Negotiations, however, were continuing through the evening, with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., still working to pass a resolution to keep the government open, White House sources said. Earlier in the day, demonstrators were seen protesting in support of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program in the Russell Senate Office Building. Democrats are refusing to back a short-term spending bill unless it includes protections for illegal immigrants brought to the country as children. We will update this story as details develop. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ◆ Latest news videos: https://goo.gl/KQEyLw ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ★ CONNECT WITH US ★ ◆ Twitter: https://goo.gl/xLBdTz ◆ Google+: https://goo.gl/qXwdWc ◆ Email: info.khung@gmail.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Videos can use content-based copyright law contains reasonable use Fair Use (https://www.youtube.com/yt/copyright/)

At the rate the federal government spends, it runs out of money on July 31. What programs should be cut to balance the budget and fund the government for the remaining five months of the year? Cutting NASA might buy two days; cutting the Navy could buy fifteen. It seems that balancing the budget may require more than just cutting government programs. What should be done?
